AN ONGOING SPIRITUAL WEBLOG
November 29, 2005

Third Day, the rock band - I hesitate to call them just a "Christian" rock band, although Christian music lovers know their material well - has a new album, Wherever You Are. They continue to challenge themselves and to look for how they can help and minister when life's challenges strike. For instance, they allowed web users to download the new track "Cry Out to Jesus" after the disaster of Hurricane Katrina, and made a donation to relief efforts for each time the song was downloaded.

The lyrics to "Cry Out to Jesus" include "There is hope for the helpless / Rest fo the weary / Love for the broken heart / There is grace and forgiveness / Mercy and healing / He'll meet you wherever you are..." Yes, God is present whether we perceive Him or not.

Here in the United States today is a marketing and shopping frenzy - typically the biggest shopping day of the year. Retailers go all out to get you in their stores and shop for the holidays, including opening at 4AM!

Gift giving is good - going crazy with materialism isn't. We all must watch what we put in our minds. The Good Word with prayer, scripture and meditation is important. Advertising messages may not be avoided, but at least give yourself a fighting change. It might be too late this year, but if you are reading this today, consider visiting the Buy Nothing Day website.

There is a very real need for us to have gratitude in our lives. Being grateful is more than a “warm and fuzzy feeling good” thing. Gratitude is best expressed in action. This action can express itself in giving thanks and spreading joy, in sacrificing our wants in order to help others and by acknowledging that without God we cannot live a life of purpose.

It’s important to create a gratitude list and not just when the Thanksgiving holiday comes around. If you can start writing a list of all the things you are grateful for you will soon discover that no matter what problems and challenges you are currently facing there is always something you can be grateful for. Another day of life. A design for living taught to us through the Gospel way of Life. Jesus Christ is both divine and human, so that means we have a God that understands us completely. What a miracle that God chooses to so completely identify with us that He became one of us and lived not for vain glory, but for bringing all us wandering sheep back to Him to we can have a real relationship and ultimately help spread that good news to others.

Nothing can separate us from this if we will only choose to accept God’s invitation. Not disease, addiction, financial struggle, war, poverty, unjust rulers or any problem you can think of. The other thing to remember this Thanksgiving, especially if you are preparing the meal and doing all the busy work for visitors, family and friends is to not miss what’s most important - God in our midst. Jesus essentially communicated this to us in Luke 10:38-42 when he told Martha not to get so worried and upset. Sure, preparations and work are necessary for the big meal. And hopefully you have others chipping in with a helping hand. But make time to enjoy the time together at your Thanksgiving meal and to truly count your blessings.

A study just released reports that children raised in some eastern European orphanages that didn’t get proper nurturing, such as a lack of physical and emotional contact, suffer from long-lasting deficit in two hormones involved in forming social bonds.

As reported at medpagetoday.com, “the deficits in oxytocin and arginine vasopressin persisted even after the children were removed from the orphanages and placed with loving and stable families in Wisconsin, Dr. Pollack and colleagues reported in the Nov. 21 online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.”

This tells us that caring and loving attention is important – something we should know anyhow. Hug your kids today.

The Living the Solution site continues to get many prayer requests. People pray about all kinds of things. We are encouraged to pray always and I believe strongly that it doesn’t change God’s attitude towards us. It changes our attitude towards God, and ultimately towards others.

This prayer request came in recently and I want to share it with you as an example of a fine prayer request. “Hi, we are having our Thanksgiving banquet for the homeless this week and we really need your prayers that the workers would be strengthened and that the homeless would be saved and deeply loved.” The reason this is a such a good prayer is because it is about helping others and asking that those involved – both the helpers and those benefiting from the help – are strengthened and loved.

Do you wonder why we give thanks to God? Thanksgiving is a holiday celebrated this year in the United States on November 24. I read an interesting piece about why we should give thanks to God on Thanksgiving based on a study of Psalm 100. Max Frazier, Jr. gives us many reasons from this psalm, including that God is good, everlasting, and merciful. God made us and saved us. You can read the piece here. We also have spotlighted some Thanksgiving resources from Gospelcom.net ministries – go here.

The way of violence does not beget peace. Yet, our world - our lives - often are violent. If not in action, at least in thought.

The United States presence in Iraq continues to be one where the troops are faced with ongoing violence and hostility. Being a soldier in harm's way is tough. If our country truly is trying to bring democracy and justice to a people that were in bondage to their previous government then we have high standards to uphold. That is why the news that the CIA has secret detention centers where prisoners are, or have been, tortured is so disturbing.

Surely Jesus would not condone torture. I'm looking for government leaders willing to be honest and correct wrongs when they should. I don't have high expectations of that happening, but I also don't want to dismiss wrong actions with a "shrug" and "that's just the way it is". That is the way of the cynic.

I'm sure many of you are familiar with the Prayer of St. Francis. This prayer, if I am humbly willing to pray it, asks me to do things that are the opposite of my natural tendency. I don't typically want to return hate with love, or understand rather than to be understood. I'm often hard-pressed to comfort instead of being comforted.

This is the great way that God can change us. If we ask Him to remove the self-centeredness that blocks us from being loving, caring individuals — true peacemakers — then amazing changes can take place in our lives and the lives of others.

Someone gave me a good tip at a Men's retreat this past weekend. He suggested that if the whole of the St. Francis prayer seems too difficult, try using one line each day as a mantra. Interesting and helpful. Lord, Make me an instrument of your peace — today.

Christians believe and hold dear that God, through Christ Jesus, will be present within us. If you think about this it is a radical idea. The All Powerful, Loving and Divine One present to us in the most intimate way. But that is what New Testament theology teaches - that the we are a temple of the Holy Spirit who instructs and guides us if we willingly and honestly seek God.

If you accept that you are a beloved child of God and want this God-consciousness then you can join with others in prayerful gratitude and rejoicing. God is with us and works through us. God is not a distant "other". When we live the Gospel we are transformed and grow to unity with God.

No wonder the world's ways are not our ways.
