| LIVING THE
SOLUTION WITH DAILY INSPIRATION |
Live creatively,
friends. If someone falls into sin, forgivingly restore
him, saving your critical comments for yourself. You
might be needing forgiveness before the days out. Stoop
down and reach out to those who are oppressed. Share
their burdens, and so complete Christ's law. If you
think you are too good for that, you are badly deceived.
(Galatians 6:1-3 — The Message)
Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought,
but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in
accordance with the measure of faith God has given
you. (Romans 12:3 — NIV)
We deceive ourselves when we think we
are something we are not.
We have been taught, and rightly so, that these verses
are talking about not thinking that we are better than
we are, that we are something special in and of our own
abilities. All that we are, all that we have, and all that
we will ever be is by the grace of God. It is the result
of His gifting to us our talents, abilities, drive and
desires. But there is another side to these verses. I have
known many people (I am one) that have thought less of
themselves than they ought to. Paul says, in today’s
verse, think of yourself with sober judgment. That means
be accurate in your assessment; don’t think more
highly of yourself than you should, but don’t think
less of yourself either. You are a child of the Living
God, a son or daughter who God knew before He created the
Earth. You are seated with Him in Heavenly places. All
authority given to Christ has been give to you and you
can do all things through Christ and you are the focus
of God’s affection. All of this is given to you by
God’s grace out of His extravagant love for you.
Every talent, ability, gift and passion is placed there
by God. He created you and all that you are is the result
of His doing, not yours. The balance we try to achieve
is to understand that we are special and have value because
God created us and loves us, and to accept this value because
it is a gift from God and not something we achieve on our
own.
Don’t put yourself down as someone who is worthless and who has no value,
and don’t think that all you are is the result of your own doing. Be clear
in your understanding of who you are and why you are that way.
Live intentionally, purposely, free and with passion,
