Review by Tom Gilbert
There
are a glut of novels on the market about the “End
Times” – Biblical prophecy interpreted by
many as a period of great tribulation, evil and the eventual
judgment of mankind. The novel, Dawn-Apocalypse
Rising,
book 1 of a new series by K. G. Powderly Jr., takes a
different tack to present a story of God, judgment and
eventual redemption. The author starts with ancient times,
prior to the great flood that is present in nearly every
culture’s story as well as the book of Genesis.
It is during this time of Noah that the story unfolds. The book is the author’s sci-fi/fantasy allegorical
tale steeped in adventure and tension. In this post-Garden
of Eden world humans and non-earthly beings (the Watchers),
and the mingling of the two, takes center stage. There
is inter-breeding, idolatry, brutality, and a surprising
technology that all play important parts in this sweeping
mytho-historic tale. At the center of the story is A’Nu-Ahki, a Seer-Prince and the prophesied
“Comforter” of his people.
Powderly has crafted a dramatic fictionalized interpretation
of Noah and the ancient peoples that is intellectually
stimulating and picturesque. It took me a little while
to settle into the story because of the intricacy of
the background. There are a variety of prehistoric creatures
resembling dinosaurs and dragons and various clan leaders
all with names and terms that take some time to absorb.
Fortunately there is a glossary of people and terms at
the back of the book and I found myself frequently flipping
back there to sort things out.
However, once I got past this and settled into the story I found myself immersed in
an imaginative world with plenty of drama. And I found myself wondering
how close this might be to what really happened. The
Old Testament of the Bible and other mythologies imply
that godlike creatures interfered in history. Indeed,
it is Genesis’ account that such evil eventually
resulted in the need for a flood to wipe out the depravity.
Throughout the story we see the various characters struggle with doubt, fear and
faith. This is particularly true of the protagonist. A’Nu-Ahki
wrestles with his calling, with the expectations his
people
have of him and with his own-self centered desires.
We often tend to elevate mythic heroes like Noah to
an unreasonable stature. It’s good to see the
author shows the humanness, and more importantly, how
God works through people even with their faults. That
should give any of us hope.
This first book in the series ends before the deluge, but clearly the stage is set for
the coming destruction as well as the call to A’Nu-Ahki to prepare for it.
You can purchase the book through K.G.
Powderly Jr.’s website or at iUniverse.com.
