Dietrech CD “Always In My Heart”

Contemporary Pop Christian music is typically light and sweet. Its
intent is to uplift and make you feel good about God,
prayer and life. There is nothing inherently bad in all
this.
When the music is shallow and saccharine, however, I wonder
if there is any real contribution to spiritual growth.
Certainly this problem is not limited to Christian pop
music. The music industry as a whole pumps out lots of
disposable and mindless product.
The music of Dietrech is bouncy and catchy. It’s
not disposable or mindless, but it also is not real challenging.
At first listen many of the songs have a similar sound,
but repeated review reveals the songs’ individual
characteristics. There’s an optimistic mood throughout
and the performance and production is professional. I
can imagine hearing some of these songs on most any contemporary
Christian radio station and having them fit well with
much of what you hear on those stations these days.
The best songs (the ones you’ll find yourself humming
along to) are “Just A Little Prayer”, “Always
In My Heart”, and “Suddenly”. They all
tend to have that optimistic and bouncy sound. There are
a couple of songs that are slower in tempo and a bit more
soulful, like “Cry Lady Cry” (dedicated to
his mother – the liner notes say “she was
never able to survive her own life”) and a nice
version of “Amazing Grace”.
There are a couple of songs that slide into cheesiness,
most notably “J.C.’s Freedom Jam” and
the “Power of Prayer”. Fortunately, that doesn’t
sink the release. There’s enough good on the CD
to give it a passing grade.
“Always In My Heart”, is an independent release
without the promotional and marketing muscle a larger
label could offer. I think when an artist has to rely
on limited resources you can sometimes get a more honest
presentation, even if it’s not as slick or professional
looking.
The Dietrech website
has some endorsements from a few different celebrities
and the bio section notes the strong influence of recording
artist Carman on his style. It’s also noteworthy
that he involves himself in some worthwhile efforts like
the Fred Jordan Mission’s Christmas show for the
homeless in Los Angeles, and his current involvement with
World Vision. For more information and to purchase the
CD visit Dietrech on the Web at www.dietrech.com.
