Opening Thoughts:

Welcome to the New Year…and the “first day of the rest of your life”. Funny how clichés can be so easily dismissed despite the truth they hold.

I like to think of every day as a “New Year’s Day”. Some people point to entropy as “a process of degradation or running down or a trend to disorder” (Merriam-Webster Dictionary), but I think there is plenty of evidence of creation as ongoing. In the spiritual sense, God is constantly recreating us. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” (2 Corinthians 5:17).

No wonder we like the idea of recreation. Let God re-create you each day.

 FEATURED ARTICLE
The One Thing
by Tom Gilbert

You and I are probably a lot alike. We like to do the things that please us; we get upset when things don’t go the way we want. We enjoy the good times and struggle through the bad.

Then again, you and I may be completely different. Your taste in music, food and theater may be the opposite of mine. Your sports team is not mine. You say “po-tay-to”, I say “po-tah-to”.

And, I, like you, reserve the right to change my opinion.

We can be such a mass of contradictions.

Moments of Clarity

Because we are human beings full of likes, dislikes, and contradictions it can often be a real challenge to find clarity in life. It’s easy for me to clutter my day with too many things. In the resulting confusion I can easily wander off in the wrong direction.

To stay focused we must have a light that leads us. The amazing thing about God is that he came into our world as the light that brings us home. I love the way it is expressed in the Gospel of John:

1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was with God in the beginning.
3Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4In him was life, and that life was the light of men. 5The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it. (John 1-5)

As we enter yet another new year many of us will again resolve to do those things we sense we should do. We want to improve our lives and accomplish dreams. We set goals and strive for improvement.

Quite often in our good intentions we begin to fall once more into the trap of competing and confusing priorities.

 IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Business by the Book

What does it really mean to conduct business in a biblical way? It’s easy for people to twist things to fit their idea of what is best. However, the true Gospel message is essentially do good to others (love).

We’ve all seen company vision and mission statements about how they put customers and workers first. It’s easy to get disillusioned when companies fail to live up to it (Enron anyone?).

Businesses that really operate by biblical principles will do the best they can for their employees and customers, but they will also do more for those in need.

Net Impact - new leaders for better business (www.net-impact.org/) is worth exploring. Also, we’ve put together a special section on our e-store of resources to help guide and stimulate you to better business principles.

 DAILY THOUGHTS & REFLECTIONS
Chasing Happiness

Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart (Psalm 37:4).

Some people say that if you chase a butterfly, you will never catch it. But sometimes if you stop chasing it, the butterfly will come and land right on your head.

Chasing happiness can be like that. If you chase it too hard it will sometimes elude you and stay just out of your grasp.

God tells us the key to catching true happiness. Stop chasing it. Find your fun in getting to know Him and His people instead. And suddenly you will look up one day to realize that you are filled with the happiness you have always desired. Why? Because God has made you to find your happiness in Him and to find your best friendships in His family.

Quotable: Change Catalyst

"I am personally convinced that one person can be a change catalyst, a 'transformer' in any situation, any organization. Such an individual is yeast that can leaven an entire loaf. It requires vision, initiative, patience, respect, persistence, courage and faith to be a transforming leader."
