Opening Thoughts:

There’s a chill in the air here in late October. But, there is still warmth in our hearts if we strive for it. Despite differences and disagreements we can unite around the common solution as revealed from a loving God.

The Red Sox are in the World Series and might even win! All things are possible. As much as I love my “Beantown Boys” I know that the most important issues are bigger than baseball.

Thanks for reading our newest issue.

Peace and joy,

Tom Gilbert

A New Coalition
By Tom Gilbert – October 2004

We are at a critical time in the United States and this approaching election is being touted as one of the most important ever. There are many indications to support the claim. We have many challenging issues in front of us: fighting terrorism, the war in Iraq, health care, unemployment, education and the growing disparity between the “haves” and the “have-nots”, among them.

It appears to me that many of us can agree on the problems. But there is a great division on which ones to address and how to approach them. I guess this is nothing new, but the bickering and divisiveness seems to be more intense than ever.

One of the things our country seemed united on before going to war in Iraq was the importance of creating a coalition of nations to undertake whatever action deemed necessary. A true coalition that included a wide number of nations never materialized, certainly not to the extent hoped for.

What Does it Mean?

I’ve been thinking about what a coalition means and how it might be applied to our country and the issues we face.

 IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Clergy Appreciation

October is Clergy Appreciation Month. Pastors, ministers, priests, preachers and others who devote their lives to church ministry work hard and long. Often the basic gratitude we should express is missing.

Consider doing something that shows your appreciation during the month of October. It can be a meal, an encouraging note or letter or giving a resource gift.

Here are a number of helpful resources available from our special section of the Living the Solution online store

 DAILY THOUGHTS & REFLECTIONS
Right On Time

Keep this command to the letter, and don't slack off. Our Master, Jesus Christ, is on his way. He'll show up right on time, his arrival guaranteed by the Blessed and Undisputed Ruler, High King, High God. He's the only one death can't touch, his light so bright no one can get close. He's never been seen by human eyes—human eyes can't take him in! Honor to him, and eternal rule!
(1 Timothy 6:14-16, the Message)

On of my favorite lines from Lord of the Rings is at the beginning when Gandalf is coming to the Shire and Frodo tells him he’s late. “A wizard is never late! He arrives precisely when he intends to.” The same goes for the return of our Lord, Savior, and Friend, Jesus Christ. He will arrive not a moment too soon or too late, but right on time. It will be precisely when he intends to, a time only the Father knows for sure. That is why Paul admonishes Timothy not to “slack off”, to continue to press on in the faith, because the High King, the Undisputed (although some “enlightened” earthlings may dispute it, it is undisputed in Heaven in eternity) Ruler is coming again to claim His own and establish His kingdom.

So heed Paul’s advice. Don’t let the daily little nicks and jabs of life, that come from our enemy who is dead set against us and our desire to live in relationship with God, detract you from your calling. Be who God created you to be, a glorious living reflection of Himself — showing the world His love, compassion, creativity, joy of adventure, and living by faith in an intimate personal love relationship with Him, giving to and serving others as His son Jesus did. Don’t give up the fight. Yes, it is a fight — a battle. Remember we were born into a world at war, we will live our days in a world at war, and we will leave here a world at war. It is a war for your heart and the hearts of all men and women.

You have been called and you have been chosen so don’t slack off. Our Master Jesus is on His way.

Live it with Passion

Quotable: When Religion is Ours

“Religion is not ours till we live by it, till it is the Religion of our thoughts, words, and actions, till it goes with us into every place, sits uppermost on every occasion, and forms and governs our hopes and fears, our cares and pleasures.”
