Opening Thoughts:
The past week was the second anniversary of 9-11. That’s
all anyone has to say, is “nine eleven” and
we all catapult our memories back to that tragic day. What
remarkably joins us together in collective remembrance
often barely creates a shrug when it’s someone else’s
individual tragedy. I suppose we all need to be conscious
of the large number of daily hurting people. No, not just
conscious…caring and compassionate.
September 12, 2003 saw the passing of music icon Johnny
Cash at the age of 71 from his battle with diabetes. He
lived a long life full of ups and downs and gave us the
wonderful contribution of his music. He was, however, much
more that
a country music performer. He wasn’t the man typically
pointed to as a model Christian (whatever that is, anyway),
but I believe his faith was genuine.
Peace be with you,
Tom Gilbert

Be
Attitudes
by Tom Gilbert
Jesus replied, "No one who
puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service
in the kingdom of God."(Luke 9:62)
How is it possible for us to discover the true joy of God’s unconditional
love and mercy and not want to celebrate it everyday? Ah, one of the great mysteries
of the human condition. We all have those up and down days. Sometimes we are
so tired, so beaten down by the hate and violence of our world that it seems
impossible to continue. Yet, continue we must. We must continue daily to live
in union with God’s will.
In my walk I often contemplate how doing the things I must to follow Jesus are
hard and uncomfortable. Who really wants to be humble, meek and a servant to
others’ needs? Who is willing to bite their tongue at the injustice of
the world and the cruelty people inflict on others? Who wants to admit their
faults without rancor, complaining or justification? How do we hold the tension
of our failure with the bright promise of forgiveness, mercy and redemption?
How indeed?
The answer is in the willingness to continue. We have at our disposal all the
tools we need to live as lovers of life. It is only necessary to pick them up
and use them. It is just that easy…and just that hard.

Home Schooling
Home schooling has become
more and more common. Is it better than having your children in the traditional
schooling systems? That’s debated a lot. Many parents believe that
home schooling is a better alternative. I’ve heard success stories.
Still, it’s quite a commitment and not everyone is up to the challenge.
Whether you officially “home school” or not we certainly all
need to be teaching our children values and life lessons.
There are some links to resources and articles on the subject of home
schooling at our Spotlight Specials page. Go there when you get an opportunity.

| WHAT'S
NEW & COMING SOON |
|
What’s old is new again…isn’t that
a quote from someone? Anyway, now that we are officially
a year old, I thought you might want to re-visit areas
of our website. You can always get a good overview from
both the main page (be sure
to scroll down) and from our sitemap .
We keep a list of all the articles on
our site and each month we have a focus that is expressed
at the spotlight specials page.
If you would like to check out some of the other sites
we think are beneficial then visit our Links page
. One of the most frequented pages is the Daily
Thought and we have archived
past entries here.
There’s plenty more, including the Journal
weblog where
I frequently share my thoughts.
In October we plan on delving into both fiction as
evangelism and life story writing. Have you given much
thought to what your story is? It’s a great idea
to preserve it so that you can share your experience
with others.

DAILY THOUGHTS & REFLECTIONS |

Got
Milk?
I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not ready
for it. Indeed, you are not still ready. (1 Corinthians
3:2)
God does not expect you to be a spiritual giant overnight.
You have a whole life of walking with Him ahead of you.
And He will give you exactly what you need at every step
to make you in to the person He wants you to be.
When you were a baby with no teeth, your mom didn’t
give you steak to eat. She knew you weren’t ready
for it; so she started you on soft foods. In the same
way, God will grow you up spiritually one stage at a
time. Don’t get frustrated if you are not a mature
Christian yet. God is still working on that. Just stay
hungry for spiritual things. Let yourself be fed through
Bible study, prayer, worship, teaching, and friendships
with other believers. And God will cause you to grow
up to be a mighty child of His kingdom. Just take one
bite at a time.
In His grace

"The great tragedy in the church today is
that evangelicals are biblical but not contemporary, while liberals
are contemporary but not biblical. We need faithfulness to the ancient
word and sensitivity to the modern world."
