Things You Should Know By Now (by Jason
Boyett/Relevant Books)
is described as a “mini-life manual for the Quarterly
aged, but the tips and thoughts in the book are good
for anyone. I found myself wincing at times over things
I should have known by 25 (according to the book) that
I’m still struggling with over 20 years later.
Ouch! However, there is much good wisdom-cum-common sense
here.
Like the importance of learning how to change a flat
tire. Not just for the practicality of it, but for
the (surprise!) spiritual lessons contained within.
Maybe this sounds a bit like Grasshopper at the foot
of his Master in the TV show “Kung Fu”.
Ok, but let’s be honest. We all need those pearls
of wisdom from life experiences and even practical
things that we need to know that will pay real dividends
at some point in our journeys.
The good natured and often self-deprecating humor
Jason Boylett writes with helps take the sting out
of the inevitable guilt over some of these “lessons-we-should-know-by-now”.
An example: In the chapter on “How to change
a flat tire” he recommends to inspect your spare
prior to a road trip. Many cars aren’t equipped
with decent tire tools or jacks. The one that comes
with the car is often “small and wussy and hard
to manage”. Boylett tosses in the remark that “then
again, I’ve also been described that way”.).
The book is laid out in sections devoted to “The
Social”, “The Financial”, “The
Practical” and “The Cool”. It’s
interesting organization that allows for skipping around
to read those parts of greatest interest or need. This
approach is actually encouraged by the author.
Mixed in with real practical advice (“It Pays
to Live beneath Your Means”; “The Importance
of Food Safety”) is plenty of fun (How to Speak
Good…er, Well”; “First Dates are
Hard, Except on TV”).
It’s not unusual to find books that reflect
on lessons learned in life, but usually they are for
the crowd that’s much further down the road.
And “How To” tomes are a dime-a-dozen.
This is a fresh approach and truly beneficial. Don’t
wait until you are in a middle age crisis to do reflecting
and soul-searching.
Between college and “real world” career
life is a great place to ponder the forks in the road,
do a bit of smart planning and brush up on those things
you should know by now, but for some reason have eluded
you. And remember that one of the best things we should “know” is
that we have to “live” life, so put some
of this knowledge into practice.
