Third Day CD “Offerings II”
(Essential Records)
Worship albums have become so popular that now they
are almost expected of every well-known Christian
group. This is unfortunate as it tends to
water down the genre and to dilute the impact
of really good worship releases. Third Day
addresses this head on with liner notes, “Why
are you making another Offerings record?” and “Is
there really a need for yet another worship
record?”
Happily for fans Offerings II, the sequel
to Third Day’s first worship album,
Offerings, shows the group is up to the
challenge. Their answer in the liner notes
is that all their music is an act of worship
and they hope listening encourages us to
give all to God. Whether they accomplish
this for you probably depends on your musical
tastes and willingness to let go of any
preconceived notions that worship is restricted
to a church setting.
Third Day is arguably among the best Christian
rock groups around. Good enough that if
they chose to go the secular route they
would probably be as big as Creed or Collective
Soul, two bands that are somewhat spiritual
in their material while separate from the
Christian music scene.
The combination of live and studio tracks
continues the trend found on Offerings.
That was a successful formula for the first
worship release, so it is hardly surprising
to see it repeated. Also, because of the
band’s rigorous Come Together tour
schedule they didn’t have the time
to put out a full studio release of worship
songs and the inclusion of live material
fleshes out both releases nicely.
Third Day is considered a strong performing
act, so inclusion of more concert material
is welcomed by their fans. There are times,
too, when the enthusiasm of both audience
and performers comes across in the recording.
I have a tendency to want to stand and
clap along to their rendition of the late
Rich Mullins “Creed”. And,
because they are a guitar band, who doesn’t
want to engage in a bit of air-riffing?
This second offering of worship music
doesn’t break any new ground for
Third Day, but the performances and quality
of songwriting show the band is still committed,
dedicated and talented. “Nothing
Compares” is another live highlight
and “God of Wonders” with Michael
Tait of TAIT/DC Talk on guest-vocals
(the studio version is on the “City
on a Hill” soundtrack) are worthy
of the band’s track record.
So, put it on the stereo at home or in
the car and apply the requisite volume
and raise those hands in praise (unless,
of course, you’re the one driving!).
