Trent
Thomason "Ten"
(Highya Music)
Trent Thomason, former keyboard player
(late 90’s, ‘Doubletake’ album
and tour) for the long-lived and hard-rocking Christian band Petra, has put together ten
songs on the aptly titled solo release, “Ten” (Highya Music/ Distributed by WAB Entertainment).
The flow of the music drifts back and forth between a harder edged progressive rock and
power pop sound and a lighter ballad approach.
The sound will remind you of the approach of bands like Styx, Journey and Yes, and,
of course, Petra. What’s lacking is any real innovation,
but if you like your worship music with an electric keyboard emphasis
(complete with occasional synthesizer flurries) and an 80’s-90’s
rock sound then you may be right at home with this release.
The lyrics, like with many contemporary Christian recordings, doesn’t
particularly challenge. There are the obligatory adoration phrases
and some self-analysis soul searching that unfortunately doesn’t
dig deep enough. Again, there is nothing inherently wrong with this except that
this approach has become formulaic. I would prefer that artists be willing to expose their fears,
doubts and short-comings along with their faith and bring it all to the Lord. Then others will
share in the struggle (fellowship) and find encouragement as long as the songs
contain seeds of hope.
You will also find some admonishing in songs like “Running
Over” (better make the most of your time in life because “time
is slowly running over”). Fair enough – we should all take to heart that we only live so many
days and we ideally should be fully alive in each one.
Best picks:
The opening “He is not Whispering” with the confident
voicing that you can go to God with all your troubles for “He
is not holding back His love”. However, you might wonder at
the phrase, “He is not whispering, He’s calling” in
light of Elijah’s revelation that God is indeed in the silence
and not the crashing storm. True enough, however, that God can speak loud or soft.
Track 4 – “Part of You”. This song is a cry against
evolution teachers. Thomason simply looks
up to the skies to see God. He also looks
around at the wonders of nature and finds it must all
have a grand design. There’s a pretty good riff to hook you
along with the repeating chorus. This one’s the best bet for
radio play and singing along to.
The album was produced by Steve Smith who once again adds his guitar playing
(see Thomason’s first solo release, “Hold Out Your Hands”). “Ten” was
officially released July 2004. In addition to his recording career
Trent Thomason is also the Worship Director at Northview Christian
Life Church in Carmel, Indiana.
